Bylo to docela obyčejné odpoledne, když na nádraží v Coaltown zastavil Pennsylvania express. Z vagonu vystoupil muž, hned za ním z vlaku na dvoukolák vyložili rakev. Muž se jmenoval William Dunnigan (Fred MacMurray) a byl tiskovým mluvčím z velkého filmového světa zvaného Hollywood. V rakvi spočívalo tělo ženy, neznámé herečky Olgy Treskovny (Alida Valli). Chudá polská přistěhovalka Olga dostala Dunniganovým přičiněním a přímluvou u režiséra Marcuse Harrise (Lee J. Cobb) poprvé ve svém uměleckém životě šanci hlavní rolí v historickém eposu o Johance z Arku. Olga však trpěla neléčenou tuberkulózou, den po dokončení filmu zemřela, a role na hranici upálené vůdkyně francouzského národa se tak nestala její první ani poslední, protože režisér z propagačních důvodů odmítl film distribuovat. Zdrcený a do Olgy zamilovaný Dunnigan se rozhodl převézt mrtvou herečku a v klidu jejího domova ji nechat pohřbít. V Coaltown mu ale setkání se spravedlivým knězem řádu svatého Michaela Paulem (Frank Sinatra) vnuklo zdánlivě šílený nápad – pokusit se s pomocí zvonů změnit nešťastné rozhodnutí mocných hollywoodských producentů.
