Chloe je normálne dievča, ktoré život výrazne nudí. V momente, keď sfúkne sviečky na svojom narodeninovom koláči, si podobne, ako ostatní jej rovesníci želá, nech sa všetko zmení a príde čosi vzrušujúce. Vzápätí zisťuje, že patrí do starobylej, posvätnej rasy a dokonca aj medzi nimi je výnimočná. Je totiž vyvolená a okrem rýchlosti, obratnosti i pazúrikov jej osud nadelil aj deväť životov. Nemá to však len samé výhody. Existujú totiž ľudia, ktorí by ju radšej videli mŕtvu.
