Na poklidný tropický ostrov kdesi v karibské oblasti přilétá výstřední vdova madame Rosepettle. Doprovod na cestách jí dělá jen její pětadvacetiletý lehce retardovaný syn Jonathan a velká zdobená rakev. Od vypravěče příběhu, vtipně celé dění glosujícího z nebeské výše, se dozvídáme minulost jeho tak trochu podivného manželství. Madame Rosepettle se mezitím na ostrově ubytovává v luxusním hotelu, seznamuje se tu s požitkářským mořským vlkem Roseabovem a zanechává Jonathana samotného s mladičkou Rosalií, jejich znuděnou sousedkou z hotelu. Bojácný Jonathan a jeho tři roky mrtvý tatíček pověšený ve skříni se posléze stávají centrem bláznivého a lehce bizarního dění.
