Tři astronauti ztroskotají po průletu radioaktivní turbulencí na obydlené planetě. Ještě než na místo ztroskotání dorazí opice, dva přeživší astronauty zachrání místní domorodec. Z jeho vyprávění pochopí, že planetě vládnou opice. Pete Burke a Alan Virdon se po smrti svého zachránce skrývají před opicemi, které v nich vidí smrtelné nebezpečí.Seriál nás provází dobrodružstvím, které tito dva astronauté prožijí s přítelem Galenem – šimpanzem – který uvěří jejich vyprávění, že přicházejí z minulosti, kdy vzkvétala lidská rasa. Hrdiny pronásleduje gorila Urko – velitel opičí bezpečnosti – a intriky spřádá i Zaius – orangutan, předsedající nejvyšší opičí radě.
