Natočeno podle stejnojmenného románu Marka Twaina (Princ a chuďas), který se odehrává v 16.stol. v Anglii. Příběh dvou, od sebe k nerozeznání podobných chlapců, kteří se narodí ve stejný den, ovšem do značně rozdílných podmínek – Tom jako syn žebráka a zloděje Johna Cantyho a Edward jako následník anglického trůnu. O deset let později se Tom vplíží do královských zahrad a tam se náhodou setkává s mladým princem Edwardem. Ve hře si spolu vymění šaty, ovšem celá legrace bere rychlého konce ve chvíli, kdy je převlečený Edward chycen stráží a vyhozen na ulici. Zatímco Tom zůstává v paláci jako nedobrovolný princ, pravý princ Edward se ocitá na samém okraji tehdejší společnosti. Oba se pokouší celý omyl vysvětlit svému okolí, ovšem ne příliš úspěšně. Do toho všeho umírá Edwardův otec a princ se tak má stát novým králem. Zoufalého Edwarda se nastěstí ujímá šlechtic Miles Hendon (Errol Flynn) a pomáhá mu s jeho návratem do královského paláce.
