John (Steve Buscemi) utekl z Las Vegas, protože měl problém s hazardem a štěstí ho již opustilo. Teď pracuje v kanceláři pojišťovací firmy a jeho náhražkou za hazard jsou především stírací losy. Při návštěvě u šéfa, dostane nabídku, že může vyšetřovat pojistné podvody a hned mu přiřadí případ „Wildcat“. Společně s protřelým vyšetřovatelem Virgilem (Romany Malco) se ho vydávají do vegaské pouště vyšetřit.
