Toto nekonvenční drama pojednává o Finnovi, učiteli angličtiny, který hledá smysl života uprostřed bolesti a zoufalství. Finn (David Strathairn) vstupuje do krize středního věku po nedávné tragédií. Po neshodách s manželkou začne chodit po městě a prodávat místním encyklopedie. Setká se s několika lidmi, kterým knihy prodá. Avšak místo očekávané úlevy ho začíná pohlcovat úzkost a Finn zjišťuje, že je pronásledován neúprosným duchem. Prožije bezesné noci a zoufalé dny, ale díky nahlédnutí do ostatních životů plných samoty a odloučení je osudově veden k neočekávanému a velkolepému procitnutí.
