Po ukončení studia stomatologie ve Philadelphii Jesse W. Haywood odchází na západ za prací. Jako "měšťákovi" se mu do nového prostředí nedaří zapadnout. Na cestě je jeho dostavník zadržen a vykraden dvěma maskovanými bandity. Jeden z nich, Penelope "Bad Penny" Cushing, je chycen. Tváří v tvář vězení je Penelope nabídnuta milost, když bude sledovat kruh pašeráků zbraní, což také zahrnuje i místní indiánský kmen. Pro své utajení vláká Penelope Haywooda do falešného manželství. Poté, co Haywood zastřelí "Arnolda Kida", se stává legendárním "Docem Haywoodem" a vykonává další hrdinské činy (všechny ovšem se skrytou pomocí Penny).
