Joshua Lazarus (Nick Stahl) je telepat, ktorý vyrastal v detskom domove agentúry NSA. Svojimi schopnosťami pomáha vláde. Od agentúry sa dozvie, že jeho telepatia je len vedľajší efekt tzv. "Widmannovej choroby" a časom môže vďaka nej zošalieť, dokonca až zomrieť. Lazarus však stretáva ženu s podobnými schopnosťami (Taryn Manning), u ktorej sa neprejavujú žiadne známky choroby, čo Lazarusa prinúti pohrávať sa s myšlienkou, že všetko, čo mu bolo povedané, bola len lož.
