Leonard Schiller (Frank Langella) je uhladený 70-ročný spisovateľ. Jeho knihy sa už dávno prestali tlačiť a teraz žije zabudnutý a sám. V bezpečí svojho domova sa už viac ako dekádu trápi so svojim posledným románom. Keď sa absolventka Heather (Lauren Ambrose) objaví na scéne, naruší jeho osamelosť. Má záujem o ňom napísať dizertačnú prácu. Schiller čoskoro prepadne jej pôvabu a spolupráca môže začať. Ich pracovný vzťah však prerastie bežne únosné hranice. Leonard znova nájde tvorivého ducha, začne naplno tvoriť, ale zároveň sa mu naruší vzťah s jeho vlastnou dcérou.
