Renomovaný jaderný vědec Dr. Cal Meacham přežije bezmála vlastní smrt, když se jeho stíhačka stane za letu neovladatelnou. Neznámá síla však převezme řízení a bezpečně dopraví stroj na zem. V jeho laboratoři se objeví podivné součástky, které nikdo neobjednal. Vědec s pomocí svého asistenta sestaví revoluční komunikátor, z jehož obrazovky k němu následně promluví neznámý muž, vystupující pod jménem Exeter. Meacham je jím vyzván k zapojení se do tajného projektu. Přes prapodivné okolnosti tohoto setkání zvědavost mladého vědce dovede až na palubu nabídnutého bezpilotního letadla. Po několika hodinách letu se muž ocitá v Exeterově sídle, kde se setkává s dalšími vědci. Nevídaná koncentrace světových vědeckých špiček a podivné hostitelovo chování však nevěstí nic dobrého.
