Příběh úspěšného obchodníka s auty Bernarda (Gérard Depardieu), kterému vlastně nic nechybí. Má atraktivní manželku, chytré děti a je dobře hmotně zajištěn. Jenomže jednoho dne přijme sekretářku, která není ani moc hezká a navíc obtloustlá, ale Bernard se do ní zamiluje, protože si podvědomě přál vždy mít takovou ženu, tu pravou a hezkou, co má doma, by chtěl jenom jako milenku. Zatímco se milenci scházejí po různých hotelích, doma mu nastává krize… Film doprovází působivá hudba Franze Schuberta.
