Známa advokátka čiernej pleti Lilian Martinová chce podporiť kandidatúru chirurga Sandera Morgana v senátnych voľbách. Vedúca volebnej kampane, Dana Laceyová (Marlee Matlinová), pracuje s Morganom (Brian McNamara) na príprave kampane s stane sa nepriamym svedkom vraždy, keď ho niekto nečakane dobodá pri vchodových dverách. Dana je hluchá, ale vie odčítavať z pier a niekedy využíva tlmočníka. Napriek tomu, že ohlási vraždu , stáva sa podozrivou. Lilian verí v jej nevinu a ponúkne jej, že ju bude obhajovať. Robí všetko pre to, aby jej pomohla. Dana jej však skomplikuje prácu a zatají dôležitú informáciu, že kedysi chodila s Morganovým synom Billom, bola s ním tehotná. Sander Morgan ju donútil ísť na potrat. Bill sa síce príkazu podrobil, ale svojmu otcovi to nikdy neodpustil. Lilian pripustí možnosť, že vraždu spáchala nešťastná dvojica, ale bolo to tak naozaj?
