Po sesuvu části dolu zůstane v podzemí uvězněn horník Ralph Buton (Harry Belafonte). Když se mu po pěti dnech podaří dostat se skrze zasypanou část dolu zpět na povrch, zjistí, že celé město je zcela opuštěno. Z novinových titulků se dozví, že po použití atomové zbraně se nad celou Zemí začaly objevovat mraky radioaktivního prachu, před kterými lidé hromadně utíkali z velkých měst. Nakonec ale nebylo kam utéci a pravděpodobně přežilo pouze pár šťastlivců. Ralph se vydá do New Yorku, ale najde zde pouze liduprázdné ulice. Je tohle opravdu konec světa?
