Tom (Dexter Fletcher), mladý rekrut v dobách 2. světové války někde na území Východní Evropy, během svého útěku z armády zraní důstojníka. Tom je v šoku a má výbuchem poraněný sluch. Zmatený bloudí krajinou, až se shodou okolností připojí k potulné cikánské karavaně, kterou vede Darky (Bob Hoskins). Podivný mladík androgynního vzhledu je do skupiny přijat jako žena – a navíc s čarodějnými schopnostmi předvídat budoucnost: vědma "rawney".
