Obyvatelé ostrova Fara ležícího severně od Skotska mají problém s počasím: zatímco na pevnině mrzne, jim rtuť na teploměru šplhá každý den výše a výše. Nepočetná skupina obyvatel ostrova se rozroste o dva členy – mladou sekretářku Angelu, která se snaží obnovit svůj milenecký vztah s majitelem místního hostince, a o tajemného vědce Hansona (Christopher Lee). Ten tvrdí, že se snaží přijít záhadě s rostoucí teplotou na kloub, ale svým podivným chováním si sympatie místních zrovna nezískává.
