Billy a Maria Dannreutherovi (Humphrey Bogart a Gina Lollobrigida) tvoří ústřední pár. Kvůli touze po zisku se ti dva spojí se čtveřicí podvodníků. Jejich cílem je Afrika, kde chtějí snadno získat území s obrovskými uranovými zásobami. Na jejich lodi se ale objeví závada a do jejího odstranění musí šestice setrvat v zapadlém italském přístavu. Tam také potkávají další ziskuchtivý pár. Celá povedená osmička se pak vydává na plavbu do Afriky, která ale rozhodně neproběhne podle plánu.
