Film podle knihy ceněného australského spisovatele Patricka Whita Oko uragánu nás přivede do Austrálie až k nemocniční posteli, na které leží mrtvicí stižená Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling). Komorní scénu doplní i její syn Basil (Geoffrey Rush) a dcera Dorothy (Judy Davis), jenž se už před léty přestěhovali do Evropy, aby unikli matčiným věčným snahám ovládat jejich osudy. Teď se však vrátili a společně rekapitulují uplynulý život i zamotané rodinné vztahy.
