Skupina techniků a stavebníků pod vedením Wedge Donovana (John Wayne) zažívá bezprostřední nebezpečí války. Neozbrojení muži, jejichž úkolem je zajistit a udržovat ropná pole, jsou vystavováni řadě útoků japonské armády. Když ovšem vzniknou ztráty na životech, požaduje Donovan, aby byli muži ozbrojeni. To ale vede k vnitřním svárům a eskalaci útoků.
