Britský bábkový film je natočený na motívy ruskej ľudovej rozprávky. Cár Nikolay, vládca ruského kniežatstva, chce dať svoju dcéru princovi, ktorý prinesie najdrahší dar. Princezná Alexeya sa však chce vydávať z lásky a tak si vymyslí dar, ktorý jej nemôže nikto priniesť – lietajúcu loď. Kráľ dá preto rozposlať do celej krajiny správu, že ten kto priletí na lietajúcej lodi, dostane jeho dcéru za ženu a s ňou aj kráľovskú korunu. Správu nájdu dvaja drevorubačovi synovia. Prisľúbia otcovi, že ak im dá peniaze na cestu, nájdu lietajúcu loď a vrátia sa ešte bohatší. Peniaze však premárnia a tak rodičia posielajú najmladšieho syna Pyotra, aby ich našiel. Cestou stretáva lesného čarodejníka, ktorý mu ako odmenu za jeho dobrosrdečnosť vyčaruje lietajúcu loď. Má však jednu podmienku: na palubu musí vziať každého, kto ho o to požiada. Pyotr sa vydáva do kráľovho paláca a cestou stretáva množstvo podivuhodných ľudí: ostrostrelca, rýchlonohého muža zvaného Blesk, lesníka so ženou a iných, ktorí sa chcú zviesť jeho loďou. Hoci im spočiatku neverí, ešte ani zďaleka netuší, kto sú jeho spolucestujúci vlastne zač…
