Chicago, chudobná černošská štvrť. V jeden deň dostane pozvánku na pohreb otca ktorého nikdy nevidela, príde o prácu a vypnú jej elektrinu. Matka s tromi deťmi, ktoré má mimochodom každé s iným otcom po beznádejnom snažení zohnať trocha peňazí pre svoj biedny život (výrazne ju podporuje dospievajúci syn Mike – nádejný to basketbalový hráč) rozhodne sa vybrať predsa len na pohreb otca v (ne)očakávaní nejakého dedictva… a aby toho nebolo málo, objaví sa popri tom ešte niekto.
