Adaptace románu jednoho z nejslavnějších spisovatelů generace beatniků Jacka Kerouaca. Hlavními hrdiny jsou Sal Paradise a Dean Moriarty, kteří odmítají žít spokojeným konvenčním životem a spolu s dalšími kamarády se vydávají na bláznivou cestu po Spojených státech. Sal je spisovatelem a žije v New Yorku. Dean je dítětem ulice, často pobýval v polepšovně a živí se hlavně krádežemi. Oba jsou svobodní a tak pro ně není problém sbalit si věci a vyrazit. Nakonec se dostávají až do Mexika. Během svých cest si užívají absolutní svobody a volnosti, navštěvují večírky, užívají si alkoholu, drog, sexu a jazzu.
