Dvaja profesionálni zlodeji, Porter a Resnick, naplánujú jednorazovú akciu priamo v uliciach mesta, pri ktorej by mohli zinkasovať až pol milióna dolárov. Úspešne olúpia čínsku mafiu o 140 tisíc, no keď má prísť k deleniu peňazí, všetko sa zvrhne. Resnick kvôli finančným pohľadávkam syndikátu svojho parťáka podrazí a tým ho pripraví nielen o polovicu peňazí, ale aj o život… aspoň to si všetci mysleli. Porter sa však vracia – drsnejší a neústupnejší ako kedykoľvek predtým. A chce svoj podiel.Dlhých sedem rokov museli diváci čakať na pôvodnu verziu temnej kriminálky ODPLATA, ktorá bola v roku 1999 prestrihaná na požiadavku producentov, ktorí považovali Helgelandov režijný debut za príliš brutálny. Scenárista oscarového L.A. CONFIDENTIAL bol z pozície režiséra vyhodený a nahradený Johnom Myhrem, ktorý znova natočil tretinu filmu. Nová a vylepšená ODPLATA je výsledkom niekoľkoročnej práce Briana Helgelanda, ktorý chcel divákom predstaviť svoj film – v takej podobe, akú mali zhliadnuť už pred rokmi.
