Ted Hayden (John Wayne) se svým přítelem Dustym, jenž je pro něj jako vlastní otec, pátrá po své minulosti. Chce najít vraha svých skutečných rodičů a dozvědět se něco o svém mladším, nezvěstném bratrovi. Jejich cestu jim však zkříží umírající muž s dopisem v ruce. Na jeho základě se pak Ted připojuje pod jménem hledaného zločince Gata Gannse k bandě Mr. Gentryho, který má velký zájem o ranč a dceru pana Winterse. Jak se brzy ukáže, tento vůdce nebezpečné tlupy se neštítí ničeho, pokud mu to může něco vynést. Ted Hayden alias Gat Gannes a Dusty však dobře vědí, kde je právo a nečistým plánům a praktikám Mr. Gentryho nehodlají nečinně přihlížet, což je brzy přivede i na již dvanáct let zaprášenou stopu vrahů Tedovy rodiny.
